Chapter 20

Remington swiped at the tears on her cheeks and paced a circle around her small bedroom. What in the hell was wrong with her? She’d gone from never crying to crying all the time. Even when she wasn’t sad. Like right now. When she was frustrated. “Damn it, damn it, damn it.” As long as she was cursing, she couldn’t think rhymes.

At least no one was around to see the waterworks. Other than Max, who’d been watching her from his perch on a stack of dusty old books and giving her a look that clearly said, “Paw…uke.”

Remington scrubbed a hand down her face. Max was right. Her behavior would cause anyone to puke. Ugh. Remington yanked her running clothes off the floor and pulled them on. What she needed was exercise. Exercise to exorcise the sexual frustration turning her brain to mush.

She’d be damn if she’d still be standing here crying when he returned. If he returned.

She grabbed her cell and called Kevin who answered on the first ring. “I know it’s not ten-thirty yet, but let’s run,” she blurted, not bothering with hello. Jason had been with that woman for over a half-hour. Jealousy gnawed at Remington’s heart. He obviously wasn’t going to come back and woo her into a state of submission.

“Sure. I’m almost finished shoveling the sidewalk. Why don’t you meet me at Ruby Rae’s and Sara Ann’s?” Kevin said cheerfully.

Remington rubbed the back of her neck. “I’m on my way.” She might as well put all of this unwanted adrenaline to a good use.

She had to run slowly on the snow-packed sidewalks. Which left her with plenty of breath to curse Jason. So, why was she cursing herself instead?

If she’d been any good, Jason—logical reason or not—never would have left her to go see that woman in the first place. He would have simply ignored the bimbo hollering his name at the top of her lungs and hung in there with Remington until she’d been hollering out his name in the throes of pleasure.

Bottom line, Linny must have been telling the truth. Part of her, a big part, had been hoping he’d been lying. That he was a toad. That she was a freaking miracle in bed.

The fact was, she was going to fail Tantric sex, and there were two mayhem ghosts released in Knotty, and it was her fault, and she was going to die trying to run a full marathon, and so none of it mattered, anyway.

Her breaths were coming hard and fast by the time she made it to Ruby Rae’s and Sara Ann’s. Mostly because the cold air wasn’t lung friendly. But somewhat because she’d worked herself into a tizzy of despair. Kevin and the ladies were waiting on the sidewalk. No doubt gossiping.

“Good morning,” Ruby Rae said. “We missed you this morning.”

“Yeah, sorry about that. Kevin and I decided to drink hot chocolate instead.” Remington grabbed her side and tried to slow down her heart rate and took care not to look either of the ladies in the eyes.
